About USAA
USAA is more than a professional body - it is a movement.
For nearly two decades, we have worked to build a credible, unified, and active community of sociologists and anthropologists across Uganda. We believe that development without social understanding is development that fails. Our association exists to ensure that social and cultural insight is never an afterthought in Uganda's progress.
Our Mission
"Promoting sociology and anthropology as professional disciplines in Uganda."
Our mission is active, not passive. We work every day to strengthen the professional standing of sociologists and anthropologists; to ensure that their expertise is sought, valued, and applied in Uganda's institutions, government, private sector, and civil society.
Our Vision
"A society living and developing within its full and potential values and means."
We envision a Uganda and an Africa; where communities understand themselves, where policy is informed by people, and where the richness of human society is a foundation for progress rather than an obstacle to it. Sociological and anthropological knowledge is not luxury.
Legal Foundation
USAA is duly registered in accordance with the Companies Act (Cap. 110) of Uganda as a company limited by guarantee - Registration Number 138538. It is also recognised as a Non-Governmental Organisation. This legal grounding has provided the institutional structure necessary for the association to operate with credibility and accountability.
What Drives Us
Our Objectives
We uphold and promote the ethical foundations of sociological and anthropological practice, ensuring members adhere to the highest standards of professional conduct.
We advocate for the professional rights, working conditions, and career development of our members; serving as their collective voice in public, institutional, and policy spaces.
We organize seminars, workshops, conferences, and other educational activities that foster the exchange of knowledge and keep our members at the cutting edge of the discipline.
We coordinate research grants and publish a journal, creating platforms for Uganda's social scientists to contribute to regional and global academic discourse.
We connect our members to sociological and anthropological associations across Africa and beyond, advancing the discipline at national, regional, and global levels.
We develop and manage an accreditation mechanism for sociologists and anthropologists in Uganda; issuing certificates and recognizing excellence in professional practice.
We advise government, development partners, and the private sector to ensure that social, cultural, and human dimensions are considered in development planning and implementation.
